Biographical Sketch - Dr. Michael McCurry

McCurryDr. Michael McCurry is a Professor of Geology at Idaho State University, specializing in geochemistry, volcanic and magmatic processes, and low-T alteration of igneous rocks. He earned a B.S. in Geology at the University of Washington, went on to attend graduate school at University of California at Riverside and the University of California at Los Angeles. He took his Ph.D. in Geology at UCLA in 1985 for work on the Neogene volcanic and magmatic evolution of the eastern Mojave Desert. He has taught at Sul Ross State University, Louisiana State University (field camp), New Mexico State University and, since 1990, at Idaho State University. Courses regularly taught by Dr. McCurry have included Mineralogy, Petrology, General and Environmental Geochemistry and Field Geology.

Research and publications by Dr. McCurry have been primarily aimed at fundamental problems of magma genesis, and on the evolution of the silicic volcanic systems in southeastern California, New Mexico, China, Chile, and Idaho. Recent work has also included geochemical characterization and modeling of groundwater chemistry and basalt-rock alteration at the Idaho National Laboratory.

Dr. McCurry has served as a consultant to EG&G, Idaho, is a recipient of an AWU-DOE Faculty Fellowship, and has led a variety of field trips and symposia for international, national and regional professional meetings. He is an active member of the Geological Society of America, American Geophysical Union, and Sigma Xi.
